Radiation in food safety is used generally to improve food safety (pest disinfestation),  and offer another option as a phytosanitary treatment for food moving across international or national borders.

Radiation in food safety research is utilized to reduce pest infestation and improve food safety, increase food security (reduction of food losses and wastage).

Researchers are required to do food radiation for prevention of foodborne illness, preservation of food, delay of ripening and sprouting, control of insects, and sterilization so the food can be stored without refrigeration.
